I am honored to attend the 3rd IYF English Speech Competition as a judge. As we see the number of participants increasing and the ability of their English improving every year, I thank IYF for starting this English Speech Competition. In fact, all 26 students who participated in the competition have excellent English ability. The presentation of Jang Bum Joon, who won the Speaker of the National Assembly Award, expressed the passion in his heart on stage. We could see that he put all his heart in to the presentation. The presentations of Shin Young Hoon, the Grand Prize winner, and Kim Ji Yun, the 1st Prizewinner, were outstanding as well. It was really difficult to make discrimination between speeches. I thank all 26 participants, who made us; the judges agonize to make a decision. The 3rd English Competition is over, but I hope to meet you again, and have a time of fellowship, sharing our difficulties or joys.

The presentation was considered, organized, and focused on the topic. Speaker states his premise and provided three examples of lessons in his life from people, and how by learning lessons in life, a person forms a better understanding of himself/herself.

*** Grand Prize *** ½Å¿µÈÆ(ÇѾç´ë Àç·á°øÇаú 4)

The speaker was dynamic, engaging and held the audience"s attention. His topic was interesting and his embedded story was illustrative of the point of his speech. He dared to get out of form behind the podium, which showed both confidence and a desire to communicate with the audience, rathern than merely speak to the audience.

*** First Prize *** ±èÁö¿¬(°æÈñ´ë ¾ð·ÐÁ¤º¸Çаú 3)

The speaker dealt with a controversial topic, presenting a good argument and providing pertinent examples. Her presentation was well organized, beginning with a statement of her position, followed by examples, followed by her conclusion.

** During the judging, judges did not discuss with one another their ratings or their positions of the speakers.

First of all, congratulations on your exceptional accomplishment this afternoon. Your use of visual aids were extremely effective along with your well-organized and to-the-point discourse. I was especially aroused by your relation to the incident that occurred over the rails of a Japanese subway line. Once again, congratulations on your hard-earned accomplishment and may the experience guide you towards greatness.

*** Grand Prize *** ½Å¿µÈÆ(ÇѾç´ë Àç·á°øÇаú 4)

Congratulations. Your idea was one of the brightest ones that I heard all afternoon along with your overly charismatic approach in delivering your message. So long as you can overcome your apprehensions of standing in front of an ever so scrutinizing panel of judges, I am certain you can overcome anything that may lay ahead in your path. Congratulations.

*** First Prize *** ±èÁö¿¬(°æÈñ´ë ¾ð·ÐÁ¤º¸Çаú 3)

I sincerely have never encountered such an arousing discourse earlier to this afternoon. Your approach in delivering the pith of your discourse was by no means any less than the orators of the past. Congratulations.

I thought that this speech was delivered in an exceptionally eloquent
manner. Mr. Chang exuded great confidence and feeling relating the various personal experiences that positively impacted his life.

*** Grand Prize *** ½Å¿µÈÆ(ÇѾç´ë Àç·á°øÇаú 4)

The thing that struck me the most about this young man was the highly charged and dynamic delivery of his speech. He wasted no time behind the podium in order to get out in front of the audience to make an almost personal connection. Ever thought about being a motivational speaker?

½É»çÀ§¿ø @ David Schlesinger-

First, I want to say how impressed I was with the overall quality of the speeches and the English language skills of the participants. The competition was an excellent reflection on Korea's educational system, as well as the hard work and determination of each and every contestant. Each student should be proud to have reached this final level. The quality of the presentations made the judging very difficult! In any competition, however, there are those who rise above the rest. Here, then, are my observations on the top three winners of the 2003 IYF competition (university level):

***
Speaker of the National Assembly Award
*** Àå¹üÁØ(µ¿¼´ë ±¹Á¦°ü±¤°ú 4)

Mr. Jang's speech was especially well-organized, following a widely accepted and effective practice in public speaking: introducing a theme, giving three examples, and recapitulation. This method engages the listener and leaves the audience with a sense of satisfaction in the speaker's knowledge of his subject. Mr. Jang's use of personal experiences added emotional depth to the logical progression of the points he presented. In addition, Mr. Jang's stage presence conveyed an appropriate combination of sincerity and confidence, lending credibility to his premise that having a dream, passion and loving concern for others will make you a leader of your own life.

*** Grand Prize *** ½Å¿µÈÆ(ÇѾç´ë Àç·á°øÇаú 4)

Mr. Sin was clearly the most dynamic of the speakers. His unique approach of shunning the podium, stepping out to the front of the stage in the manner of an evangelical preacher, was very effective in grasping and holding the audience's attention. The subject matter of Mr. Sin's speech was also very interesting, and followed a logical sequence of presenting a theme, supporting it with an example taken from personal experience, and drawing a conclusion. His speech had a particularly satisfying recursive dimension: he used the power of story-telling to demonstrate the power of story-telling.

*** First Prize *** ±èÁö¿¬(°æÈñ´ë ¾ð·ÐÁ¤º¸Çаú 3)

Ms. Kim's speech, despite its ungrammatical title (it should have been "A goal more precious than gold"), was remarkable for its highly personal perspective and use of powerful mental imagery (the AIDS-infected prostitute, the young man who wore skirts). Ms. Kim's spirited style complemented her subject and communicated a deep commitment to realizing her dream of becoming a movie director who depicts and challenges social prejudices and misconceptions.

½É»çÀ§¿ø @ Jung Won Park (Chief Editor of GNNet)-

It was very difficult to judge students in the 3rd IYF English Speech Competition. All the students did excellent, outstanding job, and I think everyone of them are winners. The quality of the speeches and students' English level actually has gotten much better than last year.

***
Speaker of the National Assembly Award
*** Àå¹üÁØ(µ¿¼´ë ±¹Á¦°ü±¤°ú 4)

Jang Bum Joon, the Speaker of the National Assembly Award, was very comfortable and confident in delivering his messages. His script, assuring everyone that they are already leaders of their lives, gave everyone hope.

*** Grand Prize *** ½Å¿µÈÆ(ÇѾç´ë Àç·á°øÇаú 4)

Shin Young Hoon, the Grand Prize Winner, showed confidence, and broke out of the standard that speakers had to speak behind the podium. The power of story telling, using various examples, was quite convincing.

*** First Prize *** ±èÁö¿¬(°æÈñ´ë ¾ð·ÐÁ¤º¸Çаú 3)

Kim Ji Yun, the 1st Place, showed that her dream of becoming a movie director was not just a dream of envying the entertainment world but to make the world better place to live.

2nd Place Winner, Kim Mi Ryun showed one of the most creative and effective at the same time, way to present her speech. What she learned from that experience is what we all have to overcome.
Congratulations everyone!

½É»çÀ§¿ø @ Joseph Park (IYF English Instructor)-

***
Speaker of the National Assembly Award
*** Àå¹üÁØ(µ¿¼´ë ±¹Á¦°ü±¤°ú 4)

Script was very well thought out and engaging.
Observations from the speaker"s three biggest influences of college career were unique, yet the audience could easily identify with them.
He gave clear and relevant examples to support his points.

*** Grand Prize *** ½Å¿µÈÆ(ÇѾç´ë Àç·á°øÇаú 4)

Presentation was very comfortable and it almost felt interactive. It was like a conversation rather than a speech, which gave it a different look from all other speeches. His energy and confidence captured the audience.

*** First Prize *** ±èÁö¿¬(°æÈñ´ë ¾ð·ÐÁ¤º¸Çаú 3)

Speaker touched upon the darker aspects of society, which set the speech apart from all other speeches. She effectively connected her keenness of ¡°two faces of society¡± to her dream of being a movie director. Her intonation and stage manner were excellent.
